Former Kurdish MP sentenced to 15 years in jail by Turkish court

Serefeddin Halis, a former MP in the Turkish parliament has been sentenced to 15 years in jail on charges of perpetuating propaganda on behalf of an illegal organisation, Kurdistan Workers Party. Halis was prosecuted on the grounds of 10 speeches he delivered while in office, which the prosecutor deemed as supporting PKK.

In a statement to AKnews, Halis said, “I explained in the speeches I delivered in the parliament that it is necessary for the parties to sit at the negotiation table and involve PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in the talks, and this should have been seen within the framework of freedom of expression”.
