Racially motivated attack on Kurdish woman

by

Queenscliff beach, Australia where she attacked.

A Kurdish woman was attacked on New Year’s eve in Australia by five Turkish men. She was on her way to meet up with friends, and was followed by these men. The 32-year-old was asked whether she was Kurdish, when she confirmed their assumption, they viciously attacked her.

The police are currently investigating this case. She was attacked while walking along Queenscliff beach. Buket Calisir, told the Police officers “They asked me in Turkish whether I was Kurdish and I replied that I was and then they started punching me.”

The current situation in Turkey has intensified animosity between Kurdish and Turkish people. We fear that these attacks will escalate if the Turkish government does not respond adequately to atrocities committed against Kurdish people. The continuous demonisation of Kurdish people through mainstream media, TV soaps and Turkish politicians will inevitably lead to attacks on Kurdish people, motivated by hatred for them.
