Two University students in custody since 2009 for attending pro-Kurdish rally

Baran Nayır and Ali Deniz Kılıç attended a Pro-Kurdish rally on the 6th of December 2009 organised by BDP in Istanbul. They were arrested, and accused of having six Molotov cocktails in their possession. The fingerprint results on the Molotov cocktails reached the court a year and a half later, and it was held that no resemblance of fingerprints could be found.

On December 20th 2011, the Istanbul 10th High Criminal Court ruled there was a clear lack of evidence linking the two students to the possession of Molotov cocktails during the Pro-Kurdish rally, but there was “strong suspicion”.

Both students are members of the Socialist Democracy Party (SDP) in Turkey, and have been in prison since 2009 without solid evidence. Their lawyers have said they will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

The case has been postponed until 3 April 2012.
