Iran Supreme Court approves death sentence for political prisoner
Iran’s Supreme Court has approved the execution sentence for political prisoner Habibollah Latifi, the Campaign to End Capital Punishment in Iran reports.
The campaign writes: “As the highest judicial court, the Supreme Court, rather than paying attention to the errors of this case, has treated it superficially and hastily approved the death sentence and sent it for execution.”
Latifi family has confirmed the Campaign report. An industrial engineering student from Ilam University, Habibollah Latifi was arrested in November of 2007 and sentenced to death for the charge of “enmity against God” (Moharebeh).
He was sentenced in 2008 but the sentence came under suspension after the lawyers appealed it. The execution was halted once again in December 2010 at the request of lawyers and a large group of Sanandaj people who congregated in front of the prison.
Currently, 14 Iranian-Kurd prisoners are on death row.
Most recently, another Kurd prisoner, Shirkouh Moarefi, was reported to be in imminent danger of execution.
In the past week, 18 people have been executed in various Iranian cities. The surge in the number of executions in Iran has become of grave concern for human rights activists.
